Renewable diesel, also known as ‘green diesel’, is a biomass-derived hydrocarbon suitable for use as transportation fuel in diesel engines. Common biomass feedstocks include wood and sawdust, switch grass, crop residues, soybean oil, animal fats and waste cooking oil.

Produced via various processes such as gasification, pyrolysis, hydrotreating, and other biochemical and thermochemical technologies, renewable diesel meets the identical ASTM D975 specification as traditional petroleum-based diesel.With virtually identical qualities as the original fuel, green diesel qualifies as a ‘drop-in fuel’ meaning it can be used as a direct replacement for diesel—utilizing the same existing engines and infrastructure used by traditional diesel.

Renewable diesel qualifies as an Advanced Biofuel under the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) Program, a national policy requiring a certain quantity of petroleum-based transportation fuel, heating oil or jet fuel be replaced with a certain volume of renewable fuel.  


Unlike Renewable Diesel, which is classified as a hydrocarbon, Biodiesel is a mono-alkyl ester, produced via a chemical conversion process known as transesterification. Biodiesel meets ASTM D6751 and is approved for blending with petroleum diesel only.
